The New York Times reports that absinthe, the much maligned spirit of yore, is back on the US liquor market. For years, the highly alcoholic spirit was banned in America, likely because of absinthe’s associations with madness and hallucination (Van Gogh was reportedly drinking absinthe before he decided to lop off his earlobe).
Although American distilleries are working to produce high quality absinthe, foreign companies will still ship the spirit to the US:
One absinthe that will try to brave the regulators next year is a spirit distilled by Markus Lion in Germany for the performer Marilyn Manson. Called Mansinthe, it is “designed to please newbies as well as long-term absinthe lovers,” Mr. Lion said in an e-mail message.
I, for one, am looking forward to my first date with la Fée Verte. Also, if absinthe really takes off in the States, Senior Fifth is going to be a whole lot trippier next year.
