Women’s golf struggles to shoot par in the Fall Preview

The 12th-ranked Wake Forest women’s golf team finished 13th at the 2007 Margaret Moses Branch NCAA Fall Preview Sept. 24-26 at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.
Senior Laura Crawford, junior Nannette Hill, sophomore Dolores White and freshmen Natalie Sheary and Allie Bodemann represented the Deacs on their trip to Albuquerque.
The three-day event is the only opportunity for teams outside the Mountain West Conference to play the course, which will also host the NCAA Championships May 20-23.
The 18-team field will feature nine of the Top 10 teams in the nation, including ACC rival Duke, currently ranked No. 3 nationally.
The first day of play proved to be challenging for the Deacs, as they posted a team score of eight over par, landing them in a tie for 11th place with host New Mexico.
Sheary recorded the lowest score of the day for Wake Forest, firing a team low, three under par 70.
Sheary found herself in a tie for fifth place, three shots off the pace of leader Taylor Karde of Pepperdine.
Sept. 25 proved to be equally difficult for the Deacs as they recorded a team score of six over par, bringing their two-day total to 14 over par. After competition on Sept. 25, Wake Forest was in 12th place, 25 shots off the pace set by Duke at 11 under par. Sheary and Crawford both shot a team low 74, one over par for the day.
At the completion of the final round of play on Sept. 26, the Deacs finished alone in 13th place at 18 over par for the tournament. Duke earned the team victory with a score of 16 under par, one shot better than USC.Sheary recorded the lowest tournament score for the Deacs, finishing at three under par, earning herself a tie for 13th place among individuals.
The individual winner of the event was USC senior Dewi Claire Schreefel who finished at 15 under par.
The Wake Forest women’s golf team will be back in action Oct.5-7 at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
