The Lady Deacon’s golf team had an exciting time at the 19th Annual Women’s Golf ACC Championship Tournament April 13-15, where they jumped 17 spots to come in 2nd place in the conference. Even dealing with the problems of troublesome weather conditions for the second straight weekend in a row did not faze the Deacons.

They avoided rainfall in the morning, a delayed tournament for an hour in the afternoon and finished out fighting against strong winds and dropping temperatures, not to mention competing against all of the top teams in the conference.

The Deacons played at the Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, N.C.; a par-72, and shot a 27-over for a three-day total of 44-over 908.

Duke finished with a 9-over 873, winning the conference title for their 12th consecutive year.

Behind the Lady Deacs was the women’s golf team of Florida State, finishing at 49-over 913.

UNC followed behind to take 4th place and UVA completed the top five with their final score of 56-over 920.

Spotlight Wake Forest players of the tournament were senior Mandy Goins and junior Laura Crawford who both totaled a three-day score of a 10-over 226 to tie for eighth place, just 14 strokes behind the individual winner of the tournament, Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst. Goins got the Deacs to the final round with a 4-over par, and Crawford shot 8-over par.

Senior Maggie Simmons shot an 8-over finishing with a 12-over 228 to tie for 11th, while sophomore Jean Chua finished at 14th place with a 14-over 230 and sophomore Nannette Hill rounded out Wake’s team of five with a tie for 24th place with a 21-over par.

The girls have some down time from now until May 10, when they will head to the NCAA Regionals at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La. They will be playing there May 10-12.
