Volleyball goes 3-0 in tournament

The Wake Forest volleyball team hosted the second home invitational of the season April 7. The Deacs hosted Duke, Furman and Virginia Tech and went undefeated in the invitational.

The Deacons took the first of three games against Virginia Tech and followed that with another two-game sweep against Furman.

In the last game of the tournament for the Deacs, the girls took a three-game win against Duke, which was a 2007 NCAA Tournament participant.

Leading the Deacons were redshirt senior Natalie Mullikin and sophomore Lauren McIntyre.

Mullikin lead the Deacons in average kills per game, with 3.14, while McIntyre followed close behind with 2.29.

Defensively, sophomore Megan Thornberry led the Deacs in digs per game, with 5.43.

Junior Sally Fischer also helped the team out defensively with 3.57 digs per game.

Sophomore Kelsey Jones contributed defensively with 2.86 digs per game, while junior Abby Miller added 2.57 digs per game.

Jones took the role as setter for the Deacons and led the team to a .257 attacking efficiency at the net.

Mullikin also led the team in blocks, averaging 2.5 per game.

The Demon Deacons hosted the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a combined training session, which included an exhibition match between the two squads.

The team will conclude their spring season with the third home invitational April 12 at 9 a.m.

Attending the invitational will be Appalachia State, High Point, N.C. Central, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Wilmington, Radford, Virginia Tech and William & Mary.

Admission will be free.
