The volleyball team entered their home opener on an impressive 3-0 streak and with hopes of continuing their success. They were nothing short of impressive this weekend winning all three of their matches and taking home the title of the Black and Gold Challenge.

The Deacs opened their tournament Sept. 16 against Georgetown University.

They kept the momentum going from their last three games and quickly jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first game of the match. This lead allowed them to comfortably win the game 30-22.

After a weak start in game two, the Hoyas went almost point-for-point with the Deacs until they caught fire on a seven-point run. The Deacons were unable to recover from this streak with Georgetown closing the game, 30-18.

Game three turned into a nail bitter for Wake Forest, who took an early three point lead. The Hoyas tied the game at 15 and managed to keep the Deacs within four points the whole time. The Deacons still managed to pull out the win with a score of 30-28.

The two teams stayed close in the final game of the match exchanging the lead three times. The Deacs were able to pull ahead on a 4-2 streak that gave them the lead 24-20. This was enough, as the they were able to take the game and the match 30-20.

This gave the Deacs their first home win of the season and continued their winning streak. The team had 28 total block assists in the game.

Sophomore middle blocker Jackie Lucas had seven of the 28 blocks, while senior setter Erin Borhart had six kills and 15 digs. Senior middle blocker Christy Williams had a team high 12 kills in the match as well.

The Deacs got off to a slow start Sept. 17 in their first of two matches. They went almost point-for-point with South Dakota State. Never down by more than four points Wake Forest kept the game close, and the team finally rallied and overtook the Jackrabbits to win 30-26.

Game two played much the same for the Deacs, going neck and neck with South Dakota until the 9-9 mark when a four-point run put the Jackrabbits up 13-9. The team was never able to recover from this, though, pulling as close as one point, but finally losing the game 23-30.
