Spotlight: Ashely Homitz

By Allison Lange | Sports editor

Senior Ashley Homitz, a co-captain for the women’s volleyball team, is an integral aspect of the team. As a junior last year, she played in 30 matches and started in six. However, this year, Homitz has already started in most games and has 58 kills recorded. She is second on the team in assists with 15. Along with Homitz’s help, the Deacons could achieve their high hopes for the 2008 season.

On her favorite class at Wake:

I’d have to say one that I’m in right now – Contemporary Art History with Professor John Curley.

I enjoy it because he’s a new professor and I’m an art history major. That’s what I love, and I hope to specialize in modern or contemporary art.

On the opponent she looks forward to playing most:

I’d say everyone. I think that the ACC is known for having a lot of talent, and it’s pretty even. It’s just about the passion and who is going to beat who each time.

But right now the best teams in the ACC are Georgia Tech, Clemson and Miami, so those will definitely be exciting.

On her plans after college:

I’m looking into grad schools, either for arts administration or contemporary art.

On her favorite pro sports team:

I like to pull for the Jaguars because I’m from Jacksonville.

On the team goals this season:

As a team, we hope to finish in the top three in the ACC. That’s our big goal for the year.

On the volleyball position she’s always wanted to play:

I’ve always wanted to be the setter. I used to be a middle, and I miss playing that position, but now as a right-side hitter I set occasionally, and I always get really excited when I get to set the ball.

On when she started playing volleyball:

I started playing in seventh grade.

I started because I had played every other sport and disliked basketball and soccer and because I was tall, it was what I should try by default.

I just ended up liking it.
