Lady Deacs split weekend matches with ACC opponents
By Susie Manship | Staff writer
With an ACC record of 1-0-1, the women’s soccer team headed north to face the two northernmost schools in the ACC — Maryland and Boston College.
The Deacs defeated Maryland 1-0 at College Park Oct.5. Heading into the game, Maryland had an ACC record of 0-1-0, losing to Clemson.
The game remained tied through the first half of play.
It wasn’t until the 87th minute of play that sophomore Jill Hutchinson scored the game winning goal off an assist from senior defender Ashley Burney.
This marks Hutchinson’s seventh goal on the season. Wake outshot the Terps 18-7.
“I want to congratulate Wake Forest on finding their way to the goal tonight,” Maryland Head Coach Brian Pensky said. “As we have seen thus far, in ACC games the margin of error is so small. Tonight they found a way to get a goal and unfortunately we did not.”
No. 18 Wake next traveled to Chestnut Hill, Mass, to face No. 9 Boston College. Unbeaten in Division I competition, the Eagles were 0-1-0 coming into the Oct.7 game.
Boston College gave Wake its first ACC loss of the season. Senior Maggie Horne had the first goal of the match in the 16th minute. It is her first goal of the season.
In the 41st minute, Boston College’s Amy Cadwell tied the game right before the halftime whistle was blown.
Wake held Boston College to only one goal in the second half, but that is all the Eagles needed to defeat the Deacs 2-1.
Boston College scored in the 81st minute of play.
The Deacs will have some time to rest and regroup before facing the No.12 UNC-Chapel Hill Tarheels at Chapel Hill Oct. 14.
Wake Forest will return home Oct.18 to host the Duke Blue Devils at Spry Stadium.
