Forman and Parr exit early
By Alex Botoman | Staff writer
It was a disappointing trip all around for senior Cory Parr and junior Steve Forman as they suffered early losses in singles and doubles while representing the men’s tennis team at the D’Novo All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 9-12.
The doubles team of Parr and Forman entered the event ranked No. 4 in the country and were the No. 2 seed in the draw of 32.
The Deacons cruised to a win in their first round match, defeating Alabama’s Daniel Buikema and Mathieu Thibaudeau 8-1.
However, they were upset in the next round, falling to Raony Carvalho and Christian Rojmar of Texas Tech, 6-8.
The Wake players had little more success in the singles draw.
Due to their relatively high national rankings, both were placed directly into the main draw of 64 without having to qualify.
In his first round match, No. 24-ranked Parr scored a solid 6-2, 6-2 victory over No. 29 Holden Seguso of UCLA.
However, his luck ran out in the second round, as he fell to No. 17 Conor Pollock of Texas A&M in a tight match, 6-4, 7-6(6).
No. 38 Forman lost in the first round to No. 47 Clint Bowles of Florida State 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In the consolation draw for players losing in the first round, Forman again lost his first match, this time to UCLA’s No. 37 Matt Brooklyn, 7-5, 6-4.
The All-American Championships brings together the top collegiate players from around the country for a single elimination tournament.
It is one of three opportunities for players to win an individual national title, the others being the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the NCAA Championships in May.
The Demon Deacons will be back in action on Oct. 16 when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the ITA Mideast Regional Championships.
The Deacons will then head to Charlottesville, Va., where they will compete in the ITA Indoors.
