Field hockey goes into ACC Tourney with win

By Jordan Griesbeck | Staff writer

After a week away from competition, the Wake Forest field hockey team won back-to-back games in Massachusetts this past weekend, defeating Boston College and Dartmouth in the last two matches of the regular season. The team entered the game against the Eagles as the No. 2 team in the country and retained the ranking after a 3-2 victory over its conference rival.

The 4-1 win gave the Demon Deacons a 3-2 conference record heading into the ACC Tournament, which will begin Nov. 6.

The Deacons first got on the board when senior Michelle Kasold scored her seventh goal of the season to put Wake on top 1-0 in the opening 10 minutes.

Junior Hilary Moore stretched the Deacon lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute, when she converted on a penalty corner play, assisted by fellow junior Raisa Schiller.

The lone goal for the Eagles came near the end of the first half, cutting the Wake Forest lead in half to make it 2-1. But Wake Forest junior Kim Romansky gave the Deacons some breathing room just before the break, scoring to give the team a 3-1 halftime lead.

In the second half, Wake would score one more insurance goal when senior Minou Gimbrere found the cage off a pass from fellow senior Michelle Kasold for the final goal of the game to set the score at 4-1.

Senior goalkeeper Crystal Duffield, who finished with three saves, kept the game from ever getting close.

The team then travelled less than an hour northwest to Dartmouth University, where another dominant defensive effort gave the Deacons a 5-1 non-conference victory and a 17-2 overall record. Dartmouth dropped to 6-10 on the season.

Wake Forest shut out the Big Green in the first half.

Senior Liz Fries along with Moore both posted goals during penalty corners.

Kasold started the game with a goal on a breakaway play.

She was assisted on the play by Romansky.

Moore pushed the lead to 4-0 early in the second half.

She tipped in a shot from Romansky.

Freshman Faith Adams scored her fourth goal of the season to wrap up scoring for the Deacs.

Dartmouth’s Chelsea Dodds converted on a penalty stroke to score the lone goal for the Big Green in the 62nd minute of the game.

The third-seeded Deacon field hockey team will begin play at the ACC Tournament Nov. 6 where they will again see Boston College.

Duke will host the three-day event in Durham, N.C.
