Deacs give Cardinals first loss of season

The women’s soccer team handed Louisville its first loss of the season Sept. 12, beating the Cardinals 2-0 at Spry Stadium. Sophomore Jill Hutchinson scored the team’s first goal in the 12th minute of play.

Countering in the 20th minute, the Cardinals almost converted a goal. However, sophomore Caitlin Farrell deflected the ball after freshman goalkeeper Amanda Barasha was lured out of the box.

Wake increased its offensive pressure in the second half.

In the 46th minute, sophomore Sarah Winslow scored the team’s second goal. The Deacons had 10 shots in the second half and held the Cardinals to only three during the entire game. “We came out in full force and tried to capitalize on all of our opportunities. We played well as a team,” Hutchinson said. Four days later, the Deacs participated in a battle of the Triad.

With a record of 3-3-1, Wake faced UNC-Greensboro, the reigning Southern Conference Champions. Hutchinson scored the Deacons’ only goal in the 30th minute off a corner-kick from junior Amanda Lebo. UNC-G’s Kelly Attayek replied with a goal in the 35th minute, tying the match at 1-1. Wake outshot the Spartans 25-8, marking the fourth time in seven matches that the Deacs outshot opponents by 10 or more. Barasha had three saves on the night.Wake’s next game is at 7 p.m. Sept. 21. The team looks to defend its undefeated record at home against Brown. “We are going to work extremely hard this week to make sure we’re prepared. We’re taking it game one at a time,” Hutchinson said.
