Deacs bring the heat at the Southern Intercollegiates
By Chris D’Auria | Staff writer
Wake Forest sent six of its top tennis stars to compete at the Southern Intercollegiates in Athens, Ga., Sept. 21-24.
This sextet of skill was comprised of juniors Corey Parr and Carlos Salmon, sophomores Andrew Brasseaux, Steven Forman and Jason Morgenstern and freshman Jonathon Wolff.
Out of this crew, the racket men who fared the best over the four days of competition were Parr and Forman, both of whom made it to the semifinal round of the tournament.
Parr, ranked seventh in the event, was able to beat four opponents before his run was ended in the semis, and he did this in one full match, two sweeps and a forfeit.
Forman took off after his first round bye with three straight sweeps before he lost his semifinal matchup.
The other four singles competitors were able to make some headway in the bracket, although none got as far as Parr and Forman.
Brasseaux made it to the round of 32 in Division I, while Wolff made it to the Sweet 16 in Division II. Although Morgenstern and Salmon were eliminated from the tournament in the first round, they both were able to win two matches in the consolation bracket.
On the doubles side, Parr and Salmon joined forces to crush the competition all the way to the Sweet 16.
Although the team of Brasseaux and Forman could not get past the first round, they can take consolation in the fact that both their team and Parr and Salmon lost to teams from Middle Tennessee State University.
The Deacs are traveling a long way from home this weekend as they travel to Tulsa, Okla., for the ITA All-American Champions Oct. 1-7.
