The baseball team played again March 19 at High Point on Erath Field after having the previous day’s game against Oklahoma State cancelled due to rain. The Deacs showed no ill effects from the layoff as the team’s bats stayed hot, racking up 17 hits and 11 runs against the Panthers in an 11-2 victory.
The Deacs entered the game on a high after coming back from Maryland where they swept a three-game series from the Terps.
The Deacs didn’t waste anytime pouncing on the Panthers, scoring early and often. The team put two runs on the board in the first inning and pushed at least one run across the plate in seven out of the nine times they batted.
Junior Jamie D’Antona continued his recent offensive assault that earned him last week’s ACC Player of the Week award by piling up three hits, including two homeruns, his sixth and seventh of the young season. The junior also recorded three RBIs and scored three runs.
Senior outfielder Ryan Johnson also contributed with three hits and three runs scored. Another senior outfielder, Adam Bourassa, added two hits, including a double, two runs scored and an RBI Sophomore shortstop Ben Ingold chalked up three hits as well.
On the mound, sophomore Brian Bach stretched his spotless record to 3-0. Bach pitched the first three innings of the game, allowing no runs and only one hit. Freshman Kyle Young pitched four solid innings in relief, yielding only two runs. He was spotted by sophomore Daniel Davidson, who logged a scoreless eighth inning while striking out two batters.
The game was called early due to darkness with the Deacs poised to score even more, leaving two runners on base with only one out. High Point didn’t get their final at bat.
The win was the Deacs’ fifth in a row after two disappointing losses to LeMoyne and Liberty last week. The victory pushed their overall record to 14-5 on the season.
Wake Forest will return to ACC action this weekend when they play a three-game set against North Carolina, March 21-23, in Chapel Hill. The team will try to add to their perfect 3-0 record in conference play.
