Fan base disappointing at football game

The astounding overtime comeback of our Demon Deacon football team this weekend was one of the most moving sports moments in my four years at the university, but sadly the majority of the student body missed it. What started out as a packed student fan section started dwindling in the second half, and by the time Josh Adams took the ball into the end zone in overtime, sending the remaining fans into a euphoric frenzy, about one fourth of the Deacon Nation remained to see it. Sure, we few remaining fans screamed until we were hoarse, but I was truly disappointed in a student body that didn’t back our Deacs until the bitter end – whatever the outcome. I found this line in a short ESPN article dedicated to Wake’s tremendous comeback: “Smith jumped in front of the route and raced the length of the field – weaving past Steffy and Danny Oquendo – to revive a listless crowd that had been shedding fans only minutes earlier.” How does it feel to be characterized as a “listless crowd” who “sheds fans” before their team marches to an incredible overtime victory? It feels pretty awful. I’ll give all the Demon Deacon fans some words of advice that the faithful in my section called to those leaving early – “Don’t leave. Believe.” Believe in your team. The national sports media doesn’t believe in us and commentators call last season “a fluke,” but we should know better. Support your team and stay for the whole game.

Students have no excuse for leaving early Saturday

I hope all the students that left the Sept. 22 football game against Maryland early learned their lesson. Shame on them for giving up on their team. But they paid the price because they missed the most exciting finish in Wake Forest football history. Homework and parties can wait. If a student is going to take a ticket that another student could have used, stay and cheer until the end. Our football team deserves students’ full support, and the rest of the fans depend on the student section to lead the stadium in cheering.

See you at the FSU game.
