Volunteer Student of the Year
“People here stay involved and don’t just sit on their butts,” senior Tim Powell said of why he loves being active in the campus community.
Powell, a health and exercise science major applying to medical school next year, is the head of the service trip division of the Volunteer Service Corps.
This year he orchestrated four trips, sending students to India, Honduras, Vietnam and Mexico City this winter. Powell was in charge of overseeing the organization of each group and recruiting leaders and members.
Despite his skills at organizing others to go out into the community and volunteer, Powell said he enjoys the hands-on work more than the administrative aspects.
Every week he volunteers at the Community Care Center, also known as “Centro Clinico,” a clinic in Winston-Salem for those who cannot afford medical treatment elsewhere. Powell said he enjoys meeting the people from Winston through his work at the clinic.
