Wake Forest may lose coach

Say it ain’t so, Jim?

UPDATE Jim Grobe is staying at Wake. Now everyone can relax. If everyone’s freaking out this much about Grobe leaving, I can’t wait to see the internet frenzy that erupts when I graduate this May—Rob

On a sad note, it is being reported that beloved football coach Jim Grobe, is likely to be leaving his Wake Forest home. He has been courted by the Arkansas Razorbacks to coach at their university next year.  Although it will not be a done deal until tomorrow, I do not have much hope.  With the success of the Wake Forest team in the past two years, it was inevitable that a bigger team could swoop in and woo our coach with a higher salary.  Receiving $2.2 million at Arkansas opposed to $1.1 million at Wake is a huge difference, most economically-minded people can see that.  I just hope that leaving Wake isn’t an easy thing for Grobe- he brought us to our best season in memory and has re-vamped the football program at Wake Forest.  While he may be gaining money, he will be losing a community that admires and reveres him.  Whatever the final decision may be, I wish you luck, Coach Grobe.  If you choose to leave, you will be missed and it will be hard to fill your shoes.

who??

Commencement speakers not as impressive as they used to be

The commencement speaker for the 2008 graduation ceremony has been announced, and the winner is..... EJ Dionne Jr!  Many people, including myself, might be asking, who?  In addition to being a political newspaper writer, Dionne has quite an impressive resume.

He’s also a commentator for National Public Radio, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, professor at Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute and an author, most recently of Souled Out: Reclaiming Faith and Politics after the Religious Right.

Despite this laundry list of accomplishments, Dionne is following the trend of less and less prominent commencement speakers.
2001 - Barbara Bush
2002 - John McCain
2003 - Michael Bloomberg
2004 - Colin Powell
2005 - Arnold Palmer
2006 - Mark Warner
2007 - David Brooks
2008 - E.J. Dionne

We have gone from well-known politicians to people who write about politics.  I am not trying to discredit Dionne’s work in any way, but he’s no McCain or Powell.  Hopefully he can deliver a closing line as memorable as “party on, Demon Deacons, party on,” and Wake can get back on track with impressive, famous speakers.

Wake wins national debate tournament

Yesterday Wake Forest juniors Seth Gannon and Alex Lamballe won the National Debate Tournament at California State University.  They beat 77 other teams and both placed in 10th and 19th, respectively, in individual competitions as well.

Congratulations to the Wake Forest debate team!

Happy Birthday, Maya Angelou!

Tomorrow is Wake Forest professor and, more notably, world-renowned poet Maya Angelou’s 80th birthday.  Oprah is throwing her a birthday bash, but it will be hard to top Angelou’s 70th birthday present from Oprah- a week-long Caribbean cruise for Angelou and 150 friends!  I don’t know how Oprah plans to outdo herself on that one, but I’m sure it will be spectacular.

And if you were wondering, Wake Forest did get a little shout out in the article.

Now, she adds, “I’m not a writer who teaches. I’m a teacher who writes. But I had to work at Wake Forest to know that.”

She describes the joy she finds in a classroom: “I see all those little faces and big eyes. Black and white. They look like sparrows in the nest. They look up, with their mouths wide open, and I try to drop in everything I know.”

She has no plans to retire. She teaches one course each semester at Wake Forest. (Currently it’s World Poetry and Drama Performance.) She composed a poem for the Summer Olympics, is working on a collection of essays, and hosts a weekly satellite radio show on the Oprah & Friends channel.

The article traces Angelou’s troubled upbringing and her eventual successes in life.  She truly is an inspiration, happy birthday!

Update on Caparelli

image
Sophomore Lucas Caparelli was suspended from school for the spring semester following his threat of blowing up the school and being in possession of a “locked and loaded” uzi reported The Washington Post.

Now, Caparelli is a former division I football player who wonders if he ever can shed that stigma of violence, living in a state about to mark the one-year anniversary of the shooting spree at Virginia Tech that killed 32 students and faculty members, perpetrated by another alienated kid from Fairfax County whose tortured writings foreshadowed his act.

I am honestly not even sure how to handle this one, thoughts?

Wake Forest celebrates Earth Day, strives for sustainability

In honor of Earth Day, students from the “Social Values, Sustainability and Entrepreneurship” class have launched a week-long series of events to promote sustainability at Wake Forest.  This includes introducing biodegradable materials for the Pit’s ‘to-go’ services and electric golf carts which may replace the current models used on campus.  In conjunction with the ARAMARK and WFU’s Facilities Management, this week will incorporate many facets of our university.  Initiatives include biodegradable materials at the Pit, selling non-disposable water bottles, and recycling.

A full schedule of events can be found at their website (link above)

New WFU logo leaked

In an e-mail sent to the university community this morning, President Nathan O. Hatch announced that a new university logo would be announced on April 30.

But fear not, loyal readers. Some posters on the Scout.com Wake Forest message boards were able to discover the new logo a bit before the logo’s official unveiling.

The poster found the logo by looking at the university’s 2008-’09 Undergraduate Bulletin, which was recently added to the Web site.  However, someone forget to take out the logo, thus allowing some to view the logo before it was later removed from the bulletin.

While the font has changed, the most notable change is that the university is going to a shield format, where there is a stylized “W” but no real “F” to accompany it in forming a “WF.” That is, unless you think that the right side of the shield is a really stylized “F”.

» A renovated Benson. Or is it? I certainly did not notice anything new. Any guesses on the mystery Pizza Hut replacement? (I have a now vintage Pizza Hut magnet which I am willing to sell to the highest bidder)
» What in Hades is going on behind Collins? Secret construction of? (You fill in the blank)
» New baseball stadium.
» New logo everywhere and looking heinous.
» New fraternity and sorority signs looking classy.

And my personal favorite:
» $500 parking decals!!!!!!!
