in other news, abilene christian u. sees spike in applicants

Incentive to apply to some obscure school

Ever heard of Abilene Christian University in Texas?  Yeah me either.  But I predict that Abilene will see more and more applicants in the upcoming semesters due to their new policy.  An iPhone for every new student!  The idea is for students to use them to do in-class quizzes, receive homework assignments, navigate the campus, and even check account information.  How Utopian.  Are they actually expected to refrain from texting, IMing, downloading music and tv shows?  This is reminiscent of Duke’s plan a few years ago to give every student an iPod- a program which has now changed to provide the gadgets only for a select group of students in a particular program.  Regardless, Abilene Christian University is certainly making a name for itself- and I can’t help but wonder if they have a grad school program I would be interested in…

Put down the phone if you want to have kids

A fertility clinic has found a relationship between men’s cell phone use and low sperm count.  The electromagnetic radiation has been proposed to cause brain tumors, but that is under much scrutiny.  Even with this finding, there is no proof that cell phone use CAUSES poor sperm quality, but there seems to be an undeniable relationship.

In general, the researchers found, sperm count and sperm quality tended to decline as daily cell phone hours increased. Men who said they used their phones for more than four hours each day had the lowest average sperm count and the fewest normal, viable sperm.

So put down the phone!  Researchers may be unable to prove causation at the present time, but that doesn’t mean they won’t prove it eventually.  There’s so much we don’t know about technology, so it’s best to watch out for yourself and your little swimmers.

oh the dangers of multitasking

Texting while walking can lead to injuries

In London, the dangers of texting while walking down the busy city streets have caused many injuries to pedestrians.  One street, in conjunction with a British directory assistance company and Living Streets, a pedestrian awareness charity, put up thick pads around all telephone polls to make people safe and aware.  Though the stunt only lasted 24 hours, it gained lots of media attention.  A survey of 1000 people conducted by Living Streets found that 1 in 10 people had suffered injuries from texting while walking.

We often get too wrapped up in our new amazing technology- people have even been killed while listening to iPods and not paying attention to traffic.  This so-called ‘iPod oblivion’ has prompted New York State Senator Carl Kruger to propose a bill which would ban pedestrians from wearing headphones in crosswalks.  But do we really need laws like that?  People should be smart enough to look UP when walking and realize that listening to music does not make the city’s dangers disappear.
