Be thankful for those years as a band geek

A recent finding reveals that music is not important solely for people who plan on having a career in show business or the arts.  Music, be it choir, a garage band, or an ensemble, have significant correlations to success later in life.

The poll by Harris Interactive, an independent research company, showed that 88 percent of people with a post-graduate education were involved in music while in school, and 83 percent of people earning $150,000 or more had a music education.

People learn important skills through music practice, including working with groups harmoniously- personally and tonally.  This adds to the argument that schools need to keep their music programs, with so many being shut down do to lack of funding and resources.  Personal fulfillment was reported by 80% of people who were involved in music programs, showing that the majority of people enjoy their time spent in music groups.  For those people who are less concerned with the sappy sentiments of others, just think about the money people can make by playing the clarinet for a couple years!

jason mraz was great but...

Check out the Makepeace Brothers!

At first I thought Jason Mraz’s 3 opening acts- a band, a solo artist, and a magician, was a bit excessive.  However, when the first band, the Makepeace Brothers, started playing- I was hooked.  Their harmonies, care-free style, and powerful messages made for some great music.  And, an important part of being an opening band, they didn’t overstay their welcome- they knew Mraz was the main event.  They brought him out for a little appearance, but the focus was on them for a few songs, then they handed off the torch.  “Sweet Caroline,“ “Hero,“ and “Things Gonna Wait” were some of the beautiful songs they performed.  Happy listening!

Listen Up

All That Jazz

If you weren’t in Brendle Recital Hall on Thursday night you missed a great concert given by the two Jazz groups here at Wake.  It may not have been anything like the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra but it was awesome.  The two groups played pieces written by such composers as Buddy Rich and from other well-known sources such as The Blues Brothers.  The two groups are made up of students from Wake, many of which have never played jazz before.  This year’s concert offered theatrics as the trumpet players ventured into the audience at one point and then pulled out recorders to play.  Ernest Lewis led the way on many of the pieces while Professor Morgan and Dr. Bowen played with the groups.  If you ever get an opportunity in the future, I highly recommended checking out any music performance in Scales.  It’ll be worth your time and who knows, maybe you’ll break out that long forgotten horn.
