Texting while walking can lead to injuries

In London, the dangers of texting while walking down the busy city streets have caused many injuries to pedestrians.  One street, in conjunction with a British directory assistance company and Living Streets, a pedestrian awareness charity, put up thick pads around all telephone polls to make people safe and aware.  Though the stunt only lasted 24 hours, it gained lots of media attention.  A survey of 1000 people conducted by Living Streets found that 1 in 10 people had suffered injuries from texting while walking.

We often get too wrapped up in our new amazing technology- people have even been killed while listening to iPods and not paying attention to traffic.  This so-called ‘iPod oblivion’ has prompted New York State Senator Carl Kruger to propose a bill which would ban pedestrians from wearing headphones in crosswalks.  But do we really need laws like that?  People should be smart enough to look UP when walking and realize that listening to music does not make the city’s dangers disappear.
