This afternoon at Appalachian State University a gunman was spotted near student apartments and reported by student Matthew Haney. Within two hours the campus was shut down. It was suggested to students that they remain in the building or dorm they were currently in, but they were allowed to leave if they so chose. School officials updated the school’s website every thirty minutes in order to keep everyone informed.
Police say no shots were fired and no injuries were reported. They searched the area around the campus for a man who was seen with a handgun on Hill Street near the Appalachian South Apartments. The person who saw the man, Matthew Haney, described him as a white male wearing a Pink Floyd t-shirt, a dark jacket and ski mask.
In light of recent events at NIU and Virginia Tech, I think the administration and police at App State and in Boone handled this very well. Students were kept safe due to their proactive measures and thorough concern for safety. A tragedy may very well have been averted today.

After further investigation, the student who reported the gunman on App. State’s campus has admitted that it was a lie. He claims that his house was broken into and he thought his situation would be taken more seriously if he said the intruder had a gun. After a second person claimed to see the alleged man, the campus took this as a serious threat and proceeded to shut down the campus.
Shame on you, Matthew Haney. This is like calling in a bomb threat, it’s inappropriate and NOT something to joke about!!

Today at 12:57 p.m., North Carolina Police revealed that Eve Carson, Student Body President at Chapel Hill had been shot and killed. Thus far, the act seems to have been random as the police are still looking for her car. There are no suspects at this time. Carson was last seen around 1:30 a.m. and police received a 911 call around 5:00 a.m.
The following video describes the investigation process: wral.com. The latest sad details can be found at the student newspaper’s Web site, the Daily Tar Heel.
Whitney Marshall, the university’s own Student Government president, will be creating a banner in Carson’s honor. In an e-mail to the SG listserv this afternoon, Marshall wrote:
This is an extremely devastating loss for the community at UNC-Chapel Hill and it is important that we show our support for their Student Government during this time of mourning. Eve was an AMAZING president who looked out for her fellow students.
Tough times on Tobacco Road; stay strong UNC.
