New WFU logo leaked
.jpg)
In an e-mail sent to the university community this morning, President Nathan O. Hatch announced that a new university logo would be announced on April 30.
But fear not, loyal readers. Some posters on the Scout.com Wake Forest message boards were able to discover the new logo a bit before the logo’s official unveiling.
The poster found the logo by looking at the university’s 2008-’09 Undergraduate Bulletin, which was recently added to the Web site. However, someone forget to take out the logo, thus allowing some to view the logo before it was later removed from the bulletin.
While the font has changed, the most notable change is that the university is going to a shield format, where there is a stylized “W” but no real “F” to accompany it in forming a “WF.” That is, unless you think that the right side of the shield is a really stylized “F”.

It looks like the Volkswagen symbol. Nice, Wake Forest.Posted by: Molly on April 25, 2008 12:11 am
Bah, it doesn't look nearly as good as the Volkswagen logo. And nothing like Wake Forest. No F? Seriously? Blerg.Posted by: Kevin on April 25, 2008 12:43 am
why isn't the university part centered or at least stretched to fit under the wake forest?Posted by: Kara on April 25, 2008 11:12 am
This looks awful. How the hell does that represent wake?Posted by: Matt on April 25, 2008 11:40 am
This is absolutely garbage. Hatch continues to erode our core values and heritage. What a complete waste of university funds.Posted by: Matt Britt on April 25, 2008 1:35 pm
It reminds me of the med school circular logo. I know that change is always opposed at first, so maybe we should give it a chance? We should also give Hatch's strategic plans an opportunity to pan out. I think that he's looking at the big picture in trying to make the school better: of course there's going to be change involved in doing that. Wake Forest is a great university now, but don't people want Wake to be better all around?Posted by: Alex on April 25, 2008 2:29 pm
Every person on the "visual identity committe" should be fired. What a waste of time and money. I am losing my confidence in Dr. Hatch and his administration.Posted by: Todd on April 25, 2008 2:46 pm
I hate this logo. I looks like a WV. Are we West Virginia (not to be taken as a slam on West Virginia)? It's a confusing message to put out there. From a marketing standpoint, I think the shield fails miserably.Posted by: Leslie on April 25, 2008 4:52 pm
Despite all of the university's talk about building and maintaining traditions, all they can seem to do is change things rather than build off of what we already have. It's a logo, and it seems like kind of an insignificant thing, but there have been so many "little" changes over a relatively short time period at Wake that I have to wonder what else is going to be different when I come back in the following years. I'm worried that if he can't develop and act on a significantly stronger relationship with the students, Dr. Hatch will be joining the ranks of Dr. Scales on the list of Wake Forest presidents who left embarrassing blemishes on the campus. Let's etch this logo into the top of the archway and then take a wrecking ball to them both. It'll be a party. Bring your green hat.Posted by: Dave on April 25, 2008 11:26 pm
Hideous.Posted by: Andrew on April 26, 2008 4:14 am
Dave's right on...the only place this logo has a rightful place is on another blemish, the arch. President Hatch, honestly, can you name me one thing about this school that you don't plan on changing?Posted by: Bryan on April 26, 2008 10:17 am
there is not even a visible F you have to search for it. that is ludicrous, what are we, Wakeforest? one word?!?!?!?!Posted by: michael on April 26, 2008 8:20 pm
wow...embarrassing. you must be jokingPosted by: Shane on April 26, 2008 8:22 pm

I agree, Hatch was a mistakePosted by: Danny on April 27, 2008 5:15 pm
+1... Hatch hopefully won't have any buildings named after him. What a disgrace. SENIORS... DON'T GIVE WAKE A DIME AFTER YOU GRADUATE.Posted by: Lizzie on April 27, 2008 9:05 pm
I encourage all alums to call the school and discuss their objections to this new logo. Wake Forest has been responsive to alum's concerns in the past - I hope this time won't be different!Posted by: A.R. on April 27, 2008 9:55 pm
Remember how furious everyone (read: I) was about the arch? And how now its absolutely fine? Also the logo's definitely designed to look like that wrought-iron logo always on the student banner... know the one? It's definitely one of the most evocative images of Wake I can think of. Bigger fish to fry, my friendsPosted by: bert on April 27, 2008 10:08 pm

This logo is in poor taste. I agree that the current Wake Forest "logo" looks more like a brand than a University's symbol, but this is not a suitable replacement. It echoes the same contrived, false sense of history that the new Arch does. On a less valid note, it's too Gothic. Let's try not to mirror Duke too much Hatch...Posted by: Arthur on April 27, 2008 10:57 pm
I think it's boring and looks like a bank logo not a college logo. It doesn't look marketable, especially for an ACC team. Are the cheerleaders supposed to put that on their cheeks? Plus, since we're talking about the changes that have occurred on campus, I hear that the campus is going to put a road through Davis field and I think this is awful! Davis field is one of the most used lawns on campus for frisbee, flag football, kickball, studying and lounging. Secondly, I heard that the administration is trying to expand to 10,000...this too, is going to ruin the academic and social intimacy of the school. Also, this is probably insignificant but I hate the poster thing that was put in right outside the benson patio. It's tacky and obstructs the simplistic symmetry of the quad and detracts from the beauty of that beautiful magnolia tree beside it.Posted by: Elise on April 28, 2008 1:25 am
I do appreciate the administration's movement towards developing a more sustainabile and green campus. Keep up the good work!Posted by: Elise on April 28, 2008 1:28 am
