as if we didn't hate them enough already
Duke alum gives more reasons to hate the Blue Devils
In a recent article in Newsweek magazine, Duke alum Devin Gordon gives a whiny and bitter trip down memory lane. He basically confirms everything we hate about Duke University and lets us know that we are not alone. Although, since I come from Connecticut, it does make me happy to know that he hates UCONN for beating Duke in the championship game in 1999 (the man can definitely hold a grudge!)
There’s a writer named Will Blythe, a graduate of the University of North Carolina, our sworn enemy, who hates Duke so much that he wrote an entire book about it called “To Hate Like This Is to Be Happy Forever,“ and it was a best-seller. He spun his bile for a bunch of college students into serious money. And you know what? We get it. We’re fine with it. Our pain is your joy. Our tears are your sweet tea. Whenever we lose, an angel gets its wings.
That’s right, Duke. We hate you too. Maybe if you weren’t so insanely arrogant we’d care if you lost… but let’s face it, beating you 86-73 was the highlight of our season.

Well said. Duke fans not only give everybody ample reasons to hate them, but they revel in being loathed. This does precisely make them very arrogant and give us another reason to despise their faces. However, I look at our huge upset over Duke this season in two ways. First of all, it may be the highlight of my sporting experiences here at Wake thus far- getting to laugh and point fingers at all the Duke fans at the Joel who taunted the student section before the game started. But secondly and more proudly, I see our win over Duke as a turning point in their season towards the gutter. I’m pretty sure I have them losing after the first game in my brackets this year.
Go Deacs. Better yet.. Duke who?
Posted by: Alex on March 20, 2008 11:51 amI think the Gordon article is wrong. The real reason people hate Duke has nothing to do with their win/loss record or their privileged student body. I think people hate Duke for 2 reasons:
(1) their “fans” are either people who know nothing about bball but just want to get on TV (see Speedo guy, entire Cameron crazie population) OR people who do know about basketball but didn’t go to Duke and have never been to Durham—they just pull for a random winning team (the Yankee’s fans of college bball). I don’t mind “classy” Duke fans. The problem is that most Duke fans aren’t classy, they’re attention-starved idiots or hangers-on.
AND (2) the inter-ACC Duke favoritism hurts other teams (why was Singler freshman of the year rather than Jeff Teague or JJ Hickson… why were the TV commentators discussing UNC/Duke DURING the very competitive Wake/State game?)
If hating Duke was really based on their win/loss record everybody would have moved on by now.
I’m proud that Wake fans pull for teams wearing gold and black because truly love the university. Go Deacs.
