Liberty or security in the Middle East?
The protests against military general/dictator Pervez Musharraf continue to escalate in Pakistan, now with more and more college students joining the fray. It seems that everybody hates Musharraf now except for the Pakistani military.
This should be the perfect time to spread democracy in the Middle East, right? Well, not quite.
Pakistan is chock-full of Islamic extremists (including, probably, Osama bin Laden himself). And nuclear weapons. If the government in Pakistan falls, the chaos could mean these extremists get their hands on nukes. Obviously, this would not be a good combination for the Western world. So, the ultimate dilemma for the US: help to spread true democracy in the Middle East or keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists?
Either way, everyone will still probably hate us. Except Albania.
