The university was awarded the title of “Savviest Non-profit” by a widely-read investment newsletter on Oct. 16. This is thanks to innovative global investment of the university’s endowment by Treasurer Louis Morrell and his small team of researchers and managers.

Foundation & Endowment Money Management looked at about 100 leaders of non-profit investors from across the country and selected three nominees. In a ceremony in San Francisco, Wake Forest was named, making Yale University and the Hewlett Foundation the runners up.

According to the group, criteria for the Savviest Non-profit award “included not only a track record of good returns and sound investment decisions, but also innovation in how the fund manages its assets and how it approaches its goals.” The university met both requirements.

Since Morrell took over as treasurer of the university in 1995, the endowment has risen more than $750 million
