Campaign raises expectations for senior class donations
By Liza Greenspun | News editor
The Senior Class Campaign will host a kickoff party for seniors at Freddie B’s featuring free alcohol on a first come first serve basis at 9 p.m. Nov. 15.
All seniors are welcome, and the alcohol will be free to all 21-year-olds until it runs out.
According to senior Brent Sarver, the purpose of the campaign is to encourage as many seniors as possible to give to the college fund, which helps cover the 25 percent of student costs not covered by tuition.
“We’re hoping that this will spark some interest in the campaign because we’re going to be sending home a letter to students about the campaign over Thanksgiving break,” Sarver said of the senior party at Freddie B’s.
According to Sarver, this year’s Senior Class Campaign Committee began when senior Carolyn Harbaugh, the university’s student trustee, was contacted by the Office of Alumni Affairs to form this committee to encourage seniors to give back to the university.
There are now about 40 members of the committee, Sarver said, who represent many of the student leaders on campus.
Last year’s Senior Class Campaign raised almost $9,000, with a total of 300 donors. This year, Sarver said, he has bigger expectations for the seniors.
“This year we feel confident in the senior class’s loyalty to Wake Forest and have upped our total amount raised to $10,000 and at least 400 donors,” he said. Students are encouraged to give anywhere from $5 to $100 or more.
Those who donate $100 will receive a special treat, Sarver said, although he cannot reveal what this treat is until it has been confirmed. “Let’s just say that all of last year’s $100 or more donors got to have a special dinner with a special someone,” Sarver said.
Senior Week will be held Feb.11-15.
While events for this week have not been finalized, Sarver said they have brainstormed several ideas including another event at a local bar, a social in Shorty’s which faculty will also be invited to attend and a semi-formal cocktail hour at the Reynolda House on Valentine’s Day.
“We’re really just hoping to get the senior class to bond and celebrate our four years here at Wake, and hopefully consider giving back to the school while doing so,” Sarver said.
The events are sponsored by the Office of Alumni Affairs, which has many set aside for various types of campaigns, Sarver said.
At the events, forms will be available for donations, which include options to donate to the college fund, to Calloway or other. However, Sarver said they will be encouraging students to donate to the general college fund. “That supports all the students as opposed to just Calloway,” he said.
The committee is open to suggestions from the senior class. Anyone who has suggestions or questions about the Senior Class Campaign can contact Sarver at sarvba4@wfu.edu.
